Namesakes
Bishops of Rome and Popes
Tradition holds that the apostle Saint Peter was the first Bishop of Rome. By the time of Leo the Great, 400 years later, the Bishops of Rome were the most powerful figures in western Christianity. Leo began officially using the title pope (Latin papa, "father"), though it was originally shared by many bishops. Gregory VII decreed in the 11th century that only Bishops of Rome could bear the title. The popes resided in Avignon, France for 70 years during the 14th century rather than in Rome.
