Sultans of the Ottoman Empire

Osman, a tribal chieftain (bey) in western Turkey, declared independence from the Seljuk Turks in 1299, founding the dynasty that bears his name. His grandson Murad I first adopted the title Sultan. The Ottomans expanded into Europe, conquering Serbia and Bulgaria before taking Constantinople in 1453, ending the Byzantine Empire. The empire peaked under Süleyman the Magnificent, who conquered Hungary and parts of Persia and North Africa. After Süleyman's death in 1566, a gradual decline set in. The Young Turk Revolution of 1908 stripped the sultan of power, and the position was abolished in 1922.
