Named Hurricanes and Tropical Storms
Since 1953, severe North Atlantic storms have received human names from the National Hurricane Center for clearer communication. Eastern Pacific storms have been named since 1960. Initially only feminine names were used in alphabetical order (excluding Q, U, X, Y, Z). An alternating masculine-feminine system was introduced in 1978, with standardized six-year rotating name lists. Particularly destructive hurricane names are retired and replaced. This collection covers only named North Atlantic and Eastern Pacific tropical storms (winds 62-117 km/h) and hurricanes (winds above 117 km/h).
