German Kings and Holy Roman Emperors
Beginning with Charlemagne, who was declared Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III in 800, the imperial title passed through the Frankish kingdom's divisions. From Otto the Great in 962 onward, the Emperor was always the King of Germany, crowned by the pope as ruler of all Christendom. German kings were elected by the dukes of semi-sovereign duchies. After Friedrich III, nearly all kings and emperors came from the Habsburg family, which controlled vast territories across Austria, Bohemia, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. Napoleon abolished the Holy Roman Empire in 1806.
