Etymology

Zdeněk, a common Czech masculine given name, originated as a diminutive of Zdislav, but is now used as an independent name. Zdislav itself is the Czech form of the Polish name Zdzisław, which is composed of Slavic elements possibly related to děti 'to do, to say' and slava 'glory'. Alternatively, some sources link Zdeněk to the Latin name Sidonius, derived from Sidon, a Phoenician city.
