Meaning & History
Zaynab is an Arabic female given name of uncertain origin. It is possibly derived from the Arabic elements zayn meaning "beauty" and ʾab meaning "father", thus implying "beauty of the father". Alternatively, it may come from the name of a fragrant flowering tree, or it could be an Arabic form of Zenobia, the name of a pre-Islamic queen of Palmyra who challenged Roman authority.
Historical and Religious Significance
Zaynab holds great importance in Islam, particularly within Shia tradition. The name was borne by several prominent women in early Islamic history: Zaynab bint Muhammad, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad; Zaynab bint Ali, a granddaughter of the Prophet; and two of his wives, Zaynab bint Jahsh and Zaynab bint Khuzayma.
