Meaning & History

Zandra is an English short form of Alexandra. As a familiar alternative to the full form, Zandra shares Alexandra's ultimate Greek origin—from alexein 'to defend' and anēr 'man', thus meaning 'defender of men'. In Greek mythology, Alexandra was an epithet of the goddess Hera and a variant name for Cassandra. The name was borne by several early Christian saints and by Alexandra, the German-born wife of Nicholas II, the last tsar of Russia.

The clipped form Zandra emerged in the 20th century as a modern, distinctive alternative to Alex, Alexa, Allie, or Lexa, which are other short forms of Alexandra. Its popularity has been modest, but it. achieved some visibility through notable bearers like British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes.
