Meaning & History

Yishai is a Hebrew name, the original form of Jesse. In the Hebrew Bible, Yishai (יִשַׁי) is the father of King David, a key figure in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions. The name's etymology is uncertain, but it may derive from the Hebrew word shai meaning "gift" or from yesh meaning "existence." Alternatively, it could be a shortened form of a longer name.

Biblical Role

In the Old Testament (1 Samuel 16), Yishai of Bethlehem is introduced as the father of eight sons, the youngest being David. When the prophet Samuel came to anoint a new king among Jesse's sons, God instructed him not to judge by appearance but by the heart. After seven sons passed before Samuel, the youngest, David, was summoned and anointed as the future king. Yishai is also the grandson of Ruth and Boaz (Book of Ruth), and his lineage traces back to Perez and Judah (Genesis 38:29-30).

Cultural Significance

The phrase "son of Jesse" (Ben Yishai) becomes a recurring epithet for David in the Hebrew Bible. In Christianity, Jesse is significant as an ancestor of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5-6; Luke 3:32). The "Tree of Jesse," a depiction of Jesse as a reclining figure from whose side a tree or vine grows showing Christ's genealogy, became a common theme in Christian art from the Middle Ages onward. It is also referenced in the hymn "Lo, how a rose e'er blooming." The Nativity town of Bethlehem itself was earlier associated with Jesse as his residence.

Notable Bearers

While Yishai itself is largely restricted to biblical usage, its anglicized form Jesse became popular in English-speaking countries, especially after the Protestant Reformation, as a given name used by Puritans and others. Notable Jan-like figures include Jesse James (1847-1883), an American outlaw, and Jesse Owens, the Olympic athlete. However, in modern Hebrew culture, the biblical name Yishai continues to be used, often considered a strong, traditional name.
