Meaning & History
Wanjiku is a feminine given name of Kikuyu origin. In the Kikuyu foundation myth, Wanjiku was one of the nine daughters of Mumbi (also spelled Mũmbi) and her husband Gikuyu (Gĩkũyũ), the legendary ancestors of the Agĩkũyũ people. The name's literal meaning is unknown, but it is deeply associated with the lineage of the Agacikũ clan, one of the nine Kikuyu clans descended from these daughters. Wanjiku's descendants form the Agacikũ clan, one of the nine main clans of the Kikuyu tribe.
Cultural Significance
In Kikuyu tradition, Mumbi and Gikuyu were created by Ngai (God) and placed at the foot of Mount Kenya. They had nine daughters, each of whom became the matriarch of a clan. Wanjiku, as one of those daughters, holds a central place in Kikuyu identity. The Agacikũ clan (also called Aicakĩ or ĩcakĩ) traces its descent through her. The name carries connotations of ancestral heritage and cultural pride.
