V
Meaning & History
Viviane straddles two European language traditions. In French, it is the Gallic form of Viviana, which itself is the feminine of the late Roman cognomen Vivianus. In Portuguese, Viviane functions as a simple variant spelling of the more common Viviana (Portuguese speakers generally prefer the -a ending). The name is sometimes treated in French as a doublet of Vivien 2, the masculine form of the same stem. No matter the linguistic path, all these names trace back to the Latin root vivus, meaning ‘alive’ or ‘living’.
