Meaning & History
Victoria is a feminine given name derived from the Latin word victoria, meaning "victory". In Roman mythology, Victoria was the goddess of victory, equivalent to the Greek goddess Nike. It is also an attested feminine form of the Late Roman name Victorius, itself from victor 'conqueror'.
The name was borne by a 4th-century saint and martyr from North Africa, whose feast day is celebrated on December 23. Despite early Christian use, the name remained relatively uncommon in the English-speaking world until the 19th century. Its rise in popularity was propelled by Queen Victoria (1819–1901), who reigned over the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901 and was named after her mother, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, who was of German royalty. Queen Victoria's long and influential rule brought the name into widespread use throughout the British Empire. Numerous geographic locations were named after her, including the Australian state of Victoria, Victoria Falls in Africa, and the city of Victoria in Canada's British Columbia.
Victoria continues to be a immensely popular name across many languages and cultures. It is used in Danish, English, French, German, Norwegian, Romanian, Spanish, and Swedish, among others. Variant forms include Viktoria (Danish and Ukrainian), Victoire (French), Viktorya (Armenian), and Viktoryia (Belarusian); masculine counterparts include Victorio (Spanish) and Victorius (Late Roman). The Hindi/Telugu form Toya/Patali? is a separate entry. Common English diminutives include Tori, Toria, Tory, Vic, Vicki, and Vickie.
Notable Bearers
Many female members of European royal families have borne the name: Princess Victoria of the United Kingdom (1840–1901), Queen Victoria's eldest daughter; Princess Victoria of Sweden (born 1977), who is the heir apparent to the Swedish throne; and Princess Victoria of Germany (1866–1929), mentioned in the Bible as a distinction. Among saints, other than the North African martyr, Saint Victoria is venerated in Catholicism.
