Meaning & History

Tirtza is a Hebrew variant of the name Tirzah. In the Old Testament, Tirzah appears both as a personal name and as a place name. As a personal name, she is one of the five daughters of Zelophehad, whose story is narrated in the Book of Numbers (26:33; 27:1–11; 36:1–12). According to the narrative, Zelophehad died in the wilderness leaving no sons, and his daughters petitioned Moses for the right to inherit their father's property. Moses brought the case before the Lord, who ruled that the daughters could inherit, establishing a legal precedent for inheritance by daughters in the absence of male heirs. This story is significant in biblical law and has been cited in discussions of women's property rights.

Etymology

The name Tirzah (and thus Tirtza) is derived from the Hebrew root r-ṭz-h (רצה), meaning "to be pleased, to favor." The meaning of the name is therefore "favourable" or "pleasantness." In the Hebrew Bible, the place called Tirzah was an early capital of the northern kingdom of Israel before Samaria, located in the hill country of Samaria. The association with both a pleasant landscape and a royal city contributes to the name's lyrical quality.

Usage and Variants

The form Tirtza is used primarily in modern Hebrew-speaking contexts, while Tirzah is the more common transliteration in English Bibles. Other historical variants include Thersa in Biblical Latin, and Thirza or Thyrza in Dutch usage. In contemporary times, the name is rare but occasionally used among Jews or Christians who draw upon biblical figures.

Cultural and Religious Significance

Besides the daughter of Zelophehad, the name holds symbolic value in biblical geography. The city of Tirzah is mentioned in Song of Solomon 6:4: "You are beautiful, my darling, as Tirzah, lovely as Jerusalem, majestic as troops with banners." This verse famously celebrates the beauty of Tirzah alongside Jerusalem, cementing its positive connotations of attractiveness and beauty.
