Meaning & History

Thérèse is the French form of Theresa. It was borne by the French nun Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (1873–1897), who is regarded as a Doctor of the Church. The name is particularly associated with her profound spiritual writings, especially her autobiography Story of a Soul, which has inspired millions worldwide.

Etymology

The name Theresa, from which Thérèse derives, has uncertain origins. It may come from the Greek θέρος (theros) meaning "summer," or from Greek θερίζω (therizo) meaning "to harvest." Another possibility is the Greek island of Therasia, part of the Santorini archipelago. The name was first recorded as Therasia, borne by the Spanish wife of Saint Paulinus of Nola in the 4th century.

History and Spread

During the Middle Ages, Theresa and its variants were largely confined to Spain and Portugal. The name gained widespread popularity after the 16th century due to Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582), a Spanish nun, mystic, and reformer. Later, the Habsburg queen Maria Theresa (1717–1780) added to its prominence across Europe. The French form Thérèse became common in France and French-speaking regions, especially after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux's canonization in 1925.
