Meaning & History
Taisa is a Russian and Ukrainian short form of Taisiya, which itself derives from Thaïs, a name of Greek origin. The root name Thaïs possibly means "bandage" in Greek, although its early usage is most famously associated with a companion of Alexander the Great. A later bearer was the 4th-century Coptic Saint Thaïs of Alexandria, a wealthy socialite who repented and converted to Christianity, and whose story inspired numerous artistic works, including Anatole France's 1891 novel and Jules Massenet's 1894 opera. In Russian and Ukrainian, the nickname Taisa serves as a familiar, informal variant of the full name Taisiya, preserving the same historical and cultural significance.
The name Thaïs and its derivatives have spread across various cultures. Related forms include Thaïs in French, Thais in Spanish, and variant spellings such as Thaís and Taís in Portuguese (Brazilian).
