Tahmasp is a Persian masculine given name, derived from the elements تهم (tahm) meaning "brave, valiant" and اسب (asb) meaning "horse," thus literally "strong horse." The name was borne by two prominent rulers of the Safavid dynasty: Shah Tahmasp I (reigned 1524–1576) and Shah Tahmasp II (reigned 1729–1732). Its variant form is Tahmasb, and the Georgian equivalent, Tamaz, is used in that culture.
Etymology
The name combines Old Persian roots that signify valor and equine strength, reflecting the cultural importance of horses in ancient Persian society. The element tahm appears in other Persian names such as Tahmuras and is related to the Avestan word takhm, meaning "strong" or "powerful." - Shah Tahmasp I (1514–1576): The second Shah of the Safavid Empire, he succeeded his father Ismail I at age ten.
