Meaning & History
Synnöve is the Swedish form of Sunniva, a name that originates from the Old English Sunngifu, meaning "sun gift" (from sunne "sun" and giefu "gift").
Etymology
Synnöve is a Scandinavian adaptation, specifically Swedish, of the Norwegian Sunniva. The root name Sunngifu is an Old English compound, reflecting the Anglo-Saxon tradition of combining natural elements like the sun with the concept of a gift. Variants include Sunneva, Sunna (Icelandic), Sunnifa (Medieval Scandinavian), and Synnøve (Norwegian). The overall meaning has remained consistent across languages: a gift associated with the sun.
Saint Sunniva and the Legend
The name is closely tied to Saint Sunniva, a legendary 10th-century English saint. According to Acta sanctorum in Selio, a Latin hagiography composed shortly after 1170, Sunniva and her brother Alban (identified in Norwegian tradition with the Roman-era Saint Alban) fled religious persecution in England. They set sail without oars or sails, miraculously landing on the island of Selja off the coast of Norway. The local inhabitants attempted to capture them, but the cave where Sunniva and her companions sheltered collapsed, killing them. Later, miracles were attributed to Sunniva's remains, and she became the patron saint of the Diocese of Bjørgvin and all of Western Norway. Her cult spread to Iceland through works such as Óláfs saga Tryggvasonar, which includes the Albani þáttr ok Sunnifu.
Usage and Cultural Significance
Synnöve is primarily used in Sweden, while Sunniva remains the dominant form in Norway. The name aligns with the Norse tradition of names derived from natural phenomena and Christian saint veneration. Modern bearers often appreciate its rarity and melodic quality. While not common globally, the name maintains cultural weight in Scandinavia through its historical and religious associations.
