Meaning & History

Stephano is a variant of Stefano used by William Shakespeare for a drunken butler in his play The Tempest (1611). The name is ultimately derived from the Greek name Στέφανος (Stephanos), meaning "crown" or "wreath," more precisely "that which surrounds."

Shakespeare likely chose this Italian form to reflect the character's Mediterranean setting in The Tempest, which takes place on a remote island near Italy. Stephano is one of the comic characters in the play, a shipwrecked butler who, along with the jester Trinculo, plots to overthrow the island's ruler Prospero. The character's buffoonery and aspirations of power contribute to the play's themes of hierarchy and colonialism.

Beyond literature, the name Stephano also appears in astronomy: it is the name of a moon of Uranus, discovered in 1999. This moon was named after the character from The Tempest, continuing a tradition of naming Uranian moons after characters from Shakespeare's works.

The root name Stephen has a rich history, borne by the first Christian martyr, Saint Stephen, as well as kings of England, Serbia, and Poland, ten popes, and Saint Stephen of Hungary, the patron saint of Hungary. In more recent times, notable bearins include physicist Stephen Hawking and author Stephen King. Variants of the name include Stephon in African American usage, Stephanos in Greek, Stepan in Ukrainian, and Estebe or Eztebe in Basque.
