Sophia is a feminine given name derived from the Greek word Σοφία (Sophía), meaning "wisdom." In early Christian tradition, Sophia was known as the personification of wisdom, and the name is also associated with a legendary Christian martyr, Saint Sophia, who allegedly died of grief after her three daughters were martyred under Emperor Hadrian. This story is thought to have originated from a medieval misunderstanding of Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom), the name of the grand basilica in Constantinople. The name is first recorded in the 4th century.
