Meaning & History
Solvej is the Danish form of Solveig, a name of Old Norse origin. The original name Sólveig is derived from the elements sól meaning "sun" and veig meaning "strength." Thus the name carries a poetic meaning of "sun strength" or "power of the sun."
In Danish, the final "g" of Solveig became "j," reflecting the softening of g sounds in some Scandinavian languages; compare Swedish Sylvi or Solvig, and Norwegian Sølvi. The Lithuanian form Solveiga also preserves the original -g-.
The name's international recognition owes much to Henrik Ibsen's 1876 play Peer Gynt, where Solveig is the loyal heroine who waits for the title character. This literary association has kept the name alive in Scandinavia, including Denmark. Although Solvej is not among the most common Danish names, it remains a traditional choice with a distinctly Danish phonetic end, equivalent to the Norwegian and Swedish forms.
