Sissel is a Norwegian variant form of Cecilia. The name Cecilia itself derives from the Roman family name Caecilius, which is rooted in the Latin word caecus meaning "blind." The name gained widespread popularity through Saint Cecilia, a 2nd- or 3rd-century Christian martyr. According to tradition, she was sentenced to death for refusing to worship Roman gods, and after surviving attempts at suffocation, she was beheaded.
