Meaning & History
Sherill is a feminine given name of English origin. It is a variant spelling of Cheryl, which itself is an elaboration of Cherie, perhaps influenced by Beryl. The name Cheryl was very rare before the 20th century but gained popularity in the United States in the 1940s, partly due to actress Cheryl Walker (1918–1971), who had a prominent role in the 1943 movie Stage Door Canteen. After peaking in the 1950s, the name has since declined in use. As a variant, Sherill shares in this history, though it is less common.
Notable Bearers
A notable bearer of the name is Sherill Shavette Baker (born December 3, 1982), an American former professional women's basketball player who played in the WNBA for the New York Liberty, Los Angeles Sparks, and Detroit Shock. She was selected 12th overall in the 2006 WNBA draft, subsequently played for teams such as the Indiana Fever, and also competed in Israel for Elitzur Ramla and Maccabi Bnot Ashdod. After her playing career, she became a collegiate assistant coach with the George Washington Revolutionaries.
