Meaning & History
Shahrukh is the Urdu and Hindi form of Shahrokh. The name comes from Persian, meaning "royal face," derived from the elements (shāh) meaning "king" and (rokh) meaning "face." This name has a rich historical backdrop, famously borne by Shah Rukh Mirza (1377–1447), a 15th-century ruler of the Timurid Empire. He was the son of the legendary conqueror Timur, known as Timur (Tamerlane), from the Turkic-Mongol Temür meaning "iron." While Shah Rukh ruled only the eastern portion of his father's empire—including most of Persia and Transoxiana—his realm remained a cohesive and powerful force in Asia. By controlling the Silk Road, he grew immensely wealthy and chose Herat as his capital, transforming it into a cultural center.
In modern times, the name was popularized in South Asia by Indian actor Shahrukh Khan, born in 1965, often stylized as Shah Rukh Khan. He is one of the most iconic figures in Bollywood, and his fame has made the name widely recognized in the Hindi and Urdu-speaking world. Thus, Shahrukh bridges ancient Persian royalty and contemporary Indian celebrity.
