Meaning & History

Sabryna is a variant of the name Sabrina, a feminine given name of uncertain origin. Sabrina itself is a Latinized form of Habren, the original Welsh name of the River Severn in Britain. According to the legendary history of Geoffrey of Monmouth, Sabrina was the name of a princess who was drowned in the Severn River, and the river was supposedly named after her. However, it is more likely that her name was derived from the river's name, which has an unknown meaning. The myth of Sabrina was later popularized in literature, notably as a water nymph in John Milton's masque Comus (1634).

In the 20th century, the name Sabrina saw a surge in popularity due to its use in Samuel A. Taylor's play Sabrina Fair (1953) and the subsequent film adaptation Sabrina (1954), starring Audrey Hepburn. Another boost occurred in the 1960s with the introduction of the comic book character Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which spawned various television adaptations. The spelling Sabryna is a modern, less common variant that follows a trend of replacing the letter 'i' with 'y' for a more unique appearance.
