Meaning & History

Rufinus is a Roman cognomen, derived from the cognomen Rufus, meaning "red-haired" in Latin. The suffix -inus often indicates a diminutive or familial relationship, so Rufinus may have originally denoted "little Rufus" or a descendant of someone named Rufus. This name was used among both patrician and plebeian families in ancient Rome, though it never achieved the widespread popularity of its root name.

In early Christian history, several saints bore the name Rufinus. The most notable is Saint Rufinus of Assisi, a 3rd-century martyr venerated in the Catholic Church. Another is Rufinus the Syrian, a 4th-century theologian and translator who introduced Eastern ascetic traditions to the West. His controversial translations of Origen's works sparked significant theological debates during the 5th century.

The name Rufinus also appears in secular contexts. In the 5th century AD, Flavius Rufinus was a powerful Praetorian Prefect under Emperor Theodosius I, whose corruption and ambition made him a widely reviled figure. His downfall became a cautionary tale in historical writings. The Spanish and Italian cognates of Rufinus are Rufino, and the feminine form is Rufina, both still in occasional use today.

Though Rufinus fell out of common usage after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, its association with early saints helped preserve it in ecclesiastical contexts. Unlike Rufus, which experienced a revival during the Protestant Reformation, the longer derivative Rufinus remains relatively rare, found mainly in historical and religious works.
