Rudra

Rudra is a Rigvedic deity whose name probably means "crying, howling, roaring" from Sanskrit rud, referring to his fierce and stormy nature. In the Rigveda, Rudra is praised as the "mightiest of the mighty" and is associated with storms, wind, medicine, and hunting. Later Hindu tradition identifies Rudra with Shiva, and the name appears in the Shiva Sahasranama as a thousand names of Shiva. Thus, Rudra is both an independent Vedic figure and an epithet of the great god Shiva in later texts.

Etymology

The name Rudra is traditionally derived from the Sanskrit root rud meaning "to cry" or "to roar." The Bhramanas interpret it as "he who causes suffering" or "who destroys troubles." The hymn quoted from the Rudradhyaya proffers: Rauddreryz from root 'rud' which means a having them to bedd Rishima. Importantly, the god stands for severe as in "the most severe roarer/howler" complementing Maharudra form. Multiple modern translations also gloss the name as "the howler".

Religious Significance

Rudra holds a central place in the theology of Shaivism. The “Shri Rudram” hymn from the Yajurveda is devoted to Rudra and is foundational in worship, considered essential to the Shaivite sect. Rudra is adored in the “ahamannamavo anovaayā as the lord” Prathama Anuvaka of Namakam as Sadasiva. Within the dualist Siddhanta sect of Shaivism, Sashiva is deemed “Supreme Being, Pramaghavigth” whereas pan-Hindu legacy considered Mahadeva both sustainer-come-destroyer.
