Meaning & History
Ruaidrí is the Old Irish form of Ruaidhrí, a Gaelic name meaning "red king" (from rúad "red" and rí "king"). This name was borne by notable medieval Irish rulers, most famously Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair (Rory O'Connor), the last High King of Ireland in the 12th century.
Etymology
The name derives from the Old Irish elements rúad ("red") and rí ("king"). The compound element rúad often referred to red hair or a ruddy complexion—attributes highly esteemed among the Gaelic aristocracy. The king element rí was common in Irish regal names, as seen in related names like Conaire (with cú "hound") and Túathal (with túath "tribe"). Variants include the modern Irish Ruairí, and in Scottish Gaelic Rory, as well as the Scots form Roderick, which erroneously connects the second element to Ancient German ric ("ruler").
Historical significance
The earliest known bearer is Rudraige mac Sithrigi, a legendary High King of Ireland of the 2nd century BC, who is the eponymous ancestor of the Ulaid (the Clanna Rudhraighe). In early medieval times, Ruaidrí mac Domnall was the grandfather of Macbeth and founder of the Clann Ruaidrí (the House of Moray), a powerful dynasty amid 11th-century Scottish politics. The most prominent historical figure was Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair (d. 1198), who as High King of Ireland fought the Anglo-Norman invasion and is remembered as the last native ruler of all Ireland. Other medieval kings mentioned in Irish annals include Ruaidrí mac Fáeláin and Ruaidrí na Saide Buide.
Cultural significance
The name occurs in legendary Fenian Cycle tales, where Ruaidrí is sometimes given to warriors in the service of king Fionn mac Cumhaill. In modern Ireland and Scotland, the name is unambiguously masculine; however, its anglicized form Rory has occasionally been assigned to female characters in Anglophone fiction. Its visual similarity to the Latin Rodericus inspired literary adoption by figures like the writer Roderick Random in Smollett's 1748 picaresque novel.
