Meaning & History
Romeu is the Portuguese form of Romeo, a name of Italian origin meaning "from Rome" or "Roman". The name Romeo itself derives from the Late Latin Romaeus or Late Greek Ῥωμαῖος (Romaios), which denoted a native or inhabitant of Rome. Romeo is internationally recognized as the passionate lover of Juliet in William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet (1596), but the story originated earlier with Italian authors Luigi Da Porto (1524) and Matteo Bandello (1554), who used the names Giulietta and Romeo for their protagonists.
Etymology and Origins
As a direct adaptation of Romeo, Romeu retains the same meaning and Roman heritage. The name traveled into Portuguese through the cultural influence of the Italian Renaissance and the widespread popularity of Shakespeare's plays. Unlike some other European forms, Portuguese kept a spelling close to the Italian original, merely changing the final vowel to reflect typical Portuguese masculine noun endings.
Notable Bearers
Romeu is used throughout the Portuguese-speaking world, especially in Brazil and Portugal. Several sports figures bear the name, including Romeu Almeida (born 1974), a retired Portuguese footballer, and Romeu Evangelista (born 1950), a retired Brazilian footballer. In politics, Romeu Zema (born 1964) has been the governor of Minas Gerais, Brazil, since 2019. Romeu Tuma (1931–2010) was a prominent Brazilian politician.
