Meaning & History
Robi is an alternate transcription of Bengali রবি (see Rabi 2), itself a Bengali and Nepali form of Ravi. The name Ravi ultimately derives from the Surya root meaning "sun" in Sanskrit, referencing the solar deity Ravi in Hinduism, who is sometimes equated with Surya. Ravi is also found in other cultures, such as Telugu, and Rabi 2 appears in Nepali as well. A well-known bearer of the related name Ravi is the sitar maestro Ravi Shankar (1920–2012), whose music popularized Indian classical music globally. The Bengali form Robi is used in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, often as a first name for boys. The name carries solar associations, symbolizing brightness and life, and is linked to the Hindu sun god mythology. Due to its simplicity and melodious sound, Robi remains a recognizable and culturally significant name in Bengal.
