Pikachu

Pikachu is a Japanese name and the title character of the Pokémon franchise, a yellow mouse-like creature capable of generating electricity. The name derives from the Japanese onomatopoeic words ピカピカ (pikapika), meaning a sparkly or flashing sound, and チュウチュウ (chuuchuu), the sound of a mouse squeak. Combined, these elements create the name Pikachu, evoking the image of a sparkling, electricity-summoning rodent. The character was introduced in 1996 in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue for the Nintendo Game Boy. Created by Atsuko Nishida at the request of lead designer Ken Sugimori, who also finalized the design, Pikachu quickly became the mascot of the Pokémon franchise, which includes video games, trading card games, and an anime series among other media. In the anime, Pikachu has been primarily voiced by Ikue Ōtani; other voice actors include Kate Bristol, Ryan Reynolds, and Koichi Yamadera for different adaptations. Although Pikachu represents a species name, it is frequently used as the given name for the specific individual that accompanies the protagonist Ash Ketchum. This widespread use in popular culture has made Pikachu one of the most recognizable names worldwide.
