Meaning & History

Pema is a Tibetan name meaning "lotus", derived from the Sanskrit word padma through Tibetan Buddhist texts. It is the Tibetan form of Padma, a name with deep roots in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism. In Tibetan, it is written as པད་མ (Wylie: pad ma) and is used for all genders.

Etymology and Cultural Significance

As a direct borrowing from Sanskrit padma – which also appears in Tibetan script as པདྨ – the name embodies the lotus flower's symbolic purity, enlightenment, and divine birth. In Hindu cosmology, the lotus emerged from Vishnu's navel bearing the god Brahma, while in Buddhism, the lotus represents the untainted mind rising from the mud of samsara.

Historical and Religious Bearers

Pema is common among Tibetan Buddhist teachers and saints. Notable figures include:

  • Pema Lingpa (1450–1521), a Bhutanese saint and treasure revealer (tertön) of the Nyingma tradition.
  • Nyala Pema Dündul (1816–1872), a teacher of Dzogchen and Tantric Buddhism in eastern Tibet.
  • Pema Chödrön (born 1936), an American Tibetan Buddhist nun of the Shambhala tradition, widely known for her teachings on meditation and compassion.
  • Jetsun Pema (born 1990), the current queen consort of Bhutan, symbolizing the name's royal patronage.

The name appears on nearly every reincarnate lineage in Tibet, from the XII Tai Situpa, Pema Tönyö Nyinje (born 1954), to the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa, Jigmet Pema Wangchen (born 1963). Historically, it was also the name of several Bhutanese queens, including Pema Dechen (1918–1991), the third queen consort.

Usage and Variants

Outside Tibet, the name appears in related hramic languages: Telugu uses Padma and its derivative Padmini, while Khmer has Botum. Despite its Sanskrit origin, Pema is almost exclusively Tibetan in modern given-name practice.
