Otakar is a Czech masculine given name, derived from the German Ottokar, which in turn originates from the medieval Germanic name Odoacer (also spelled Odovacar and Audovacar). The Gothic root *Audawakrs combines the elements auds ("wealth") and wakrs ("vigilant"), thus meaning "wealthy and vigilant." The name is most famously associated with Odoacer, the 5th-century Germanic leader who deposed the last Western Roman emperor and became the first barbarian king of Italy.
