Meaning & History
Oseas is a Latin Biblical form of the Hebrew name Hoshea, meaning "salvation." It appears in some versions of the Latin Bible, notably as an alternate transliteration in the Vulgate. The name connects to the root yashaʿ, "to save." In the Old Testament, Hoshea was the original name of the spy Moses renamed Joshua (see Numbers 13:16). Hoshea was also the name of the last king of the northern Kingdom of Israel before its conquest by Assyria in the 8th century BC.
Origins and Biblical Context
In Latin versions of the Bible, Oseas appears as a rendering of Hoshea. The variant Osee is also found. These forms are part of a tradition that adapted Hebrew names into Latin script. The prophet Hosea (Biblical Hebrew Hoshea), who ministered in the 8th century BC, bears the same name. In the Greek Septuagint, it appears as Hosee, and in the Latin Vulgate as Osee alongside Oseas. The Portuguese form Oseias is also used in modern contexts.
Notable Bearer
In modern times, the name Oséas is known through Brazilian footballer Oséas Reis dos Santos (born 1971), commonly called Oséas. He played for several clubs, including Palmeiras and Internacional, winning the Copa Libertadores in 1999 and the Copa do Brasil with Cruzeiro in 2000. He also made brief appearances for the Brazilian national team.
