Meaning & History
Oébfinn is an Old Irish feminine name, the ancestral form of Aoibheann. It derives from the elements oíb, meaning "beauty, appearance, form," and finn, meaning "white, blessed." The name thus conveys a sense of fair or blessed beauty. In early Irish records, Oébfinn (also recorded as Aíbinn) appears in two notable contexts. According to hagiographical tradition, she was the mother of Saint Énna of Aran, a 6th-century founding abbot of Killeany on the Aran Islands. Additionally, a later Oébfinn was the daughter of Donnchad Donn, a 10th-century High King of Ireland, which underscores the name's usage among the Gaelic nobility. Variant forms include the Irish Aoibheann, Aoibhinn, and the anglicized Eavan.
