It is derived from the Old Norse elements oddr "point of a sword" and veig "strength", collectively meaning "sword-point strength". The name reflects a 19th-century trend of reviving Old Norse elements to create new, nature- or valor-themed names. It is also used in the Faroe Islands, where matronymics are common: for example, Oddveig's son would be Oddveigarson, and her daughter Oddveigardóttir.
