Meaning & History
Nosipho is a feminine given name of Xhosa and Zulu origin, meaning "gift." It is formed from the feminine prefix no- combined with isipho, the Zulu and Xhosa word for "gift." In naming traditions of the Nguni languages, the prefix no- is frequently used to indicate a female the bearer; other examples include Nomvula ("mother of rain") and Nomathemba ("mother of hope").

Cultural Significance
In Zulu and Xhosa cultures, names often reflect circumstances of birth, aspirations for the child, or family gratitude. By naming a daughter Nosipho ("gift"), parents express that they consider her a blessing. Feminine prefixes like no- can also be attached to abstract nouns to create meaningful names. The name is closely related to other Nguni names such as Zipho, which means the same but does not carry the feminine prefix, and Thembeka ("trustworthy").
