Meaning & History

Nikephoros is a Greek masculine given name meaning "carrying victory" or "bringer of victory," derived from the elements nike (victory) and phero (to carry, to bear). In ancient Greek religion, the name was also used as an epithet for the goddess Athena, who was worshipped as Nikephoros ("Victory-Bringer").

Historical Usage

Nikephoros was a particularly favored name among the Byzantine aristocracy. Several Byzantine emperors bore the name, most notably Nikephoros II Phokas (r. 963–969), a renowned military emperor who reconquered Crete and Cilicia. Others included Nikephoros I Logothetes (r. 802–811), who was killed fighting the Bulgars, and Nikephoros III Botaneiates (r. 1078–1081), whose brief reign ended in abdication. It was also used by rulers outside the empire in Epirus, like Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas and Nikephoros II Orsini.

Ecclesiastically, the name appears among several patriarchs, such as Nicephorus I of Constantinople (9th century), a writer and iconophile saint, and Nicephorus II of Constantinople (13th century), a patriarch in exile at Nicaea.

Variants and Forms

The name is also strongly associated with the Nike goddess; in Ancient Greek, Hellēnikḗ derivative Niképheros is a title of Athena. Across cultures, it survives as Nikifor (Russian), Nikiforos (Modern Greek), and Nicéphore (French), often Latinized as Nicephorus.
