Meaning & History
Neilina is a feminine form of Neil, primarily used in Scotland. The name Neil itself derives from the Irish name Niall, whose origins are debated. It may come from the old Celtic root *nītu- meaning "fury, passion" or the Old Irish word nia meaning "hero". A derivation from Old Irish nél ("cloud") has also been proposed. Niall was the name of several early Irish kings, most notably the semi-legendary Niall of the Nine Hostages, a high king of the 4th or 5th century.
Historical Spread
During the early Middle Ages, the name was adopted by Norse raiders and settlers in Ireland in the form Njáll. Through Norse influence, the name spread to England and Scotland, as well as back to Scandinavia. It was also used among the Normans, who were of Scandinavian origin. The feminine form Neilina arose in Scotland as a direct adaptation of Neil with the feminine suffix -ina.
Related Forms
An Icelandic cognate of the name is Njála, a feminine form derived from the Old Norse Njáll. While Neilina remains a rare name, it continues to be used as a distinctive female name in Scotland and among Scottish diaspora communities.
