Meaning & History

Nefeli is a modern Greek feminine name derived from the ancient Greek mythological figure Nephele. The name Nephele itself comes from the Greek word nephos (νέφος), meaning "cloud." In Greek mythology, Nephele was a cloud nymph created by Zeus from a cloud shaped to resemble the goddess Hera, as a trick for Ixion, a mortal king who desired Hera. Nephele later became the mother of the centaurs by Ixion, and also the mother of Phrixus and Helle by Athamas.
