Neemias

Neemias is the form of Nehemiah used in the Greek and Latin Old Testament. The original Hebrew name Nehemiah means "Yahweh comforts", derived from the Hebrew root naḥam (to comfort) and the divine name Yah, referring to the God of Israel. According to the Book of Nehemiah in the Old Testament, Nehemiah was a Jewish leader who oversaw the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls after the Babylonian exile.

The name Neemias appears in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible) and the Vulgate (the Latin translation), where it represents the Hebrew form Nechemya (Nᵊḥemyā). In the biblical narrative, Nehemiah served as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I and was granted permission to return to Jerusalem to restore the city's fortifications. His story, traditionally dated to the 5th century BCE, is seen as a model of leadership and faith during the post-exilic period.

The most prominent modern bearer is Neemias Queta (born 1999), a Portuguese professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the NBA. Born in Lisbon to Bissau-Guinean parents who fled civil war, Queta started basketball in 2009 for Barreirense and later played college basketball for Utah State Aggies. Standing 7 feet tall (2.1 m), he was selected as the 39th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, becoming the first Portuguese-born player ever drafted.
