Meaning & History
Naiche (pronounced NYE-chee) is an Apache name meaning "mischief maker" in the Apache language. This name was borne by a prominent 19th-century Chiricahua Apache chief, the son of Cochise. Alternate spellings include Nache, Nachi, or Natchez.
Etymology
The name Naiche derives from the Apache word meaning "mischief maker" or "meddlesome one." It reflects a cultural tradition of naming individuals after perceived characteristics or roles, though its exact linguistic roots within the Apache language are not fully documented.
Notable Bearer
Chief Naiche (c. 1857–1919) was the final hereditary chief of the Chiricahua band of the Apache people. He was the youngest son of the renowned chief Cochise and his wife Dos-teh-seh, whose name has been translated as "Something-at-the-campfire-already-cooked." Naiche had an older brother named Tahzay. As the son of Cochise and grandson of the powerful Mimbreño chief Mangas Coloradas on his mother's side, Naiche was viewed as carrying the Apache equivalent of royal blood. British-American soldier and author Britton Davis described Naiche as tall, standing 6 feet 1 inch, which was notably tall for an Apache of his time, and possessing a dignified bearing. He married three women: Haozinne, E-Clah-he, and Na-deh-yo. Naiche played a significant role in the Apache Wars, often fighting alongside Geronimo. After Geronimo's final surrender in 1886, Naiche was among those sent to prison in Florida, later relocated to Alabama and finally to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he died in 1919.
Cultural Significance
The name Naiche is deeply tied to the history of the Chiricahua Apache and their resistance against Mexican and American expansion in the 19th century. As the son of Cochise and the last hereditary chief, Naiche symbolizes the continuity of Apache leadership through a period of profound cultural upheaval. Today, the name remains rare but carries strong associations with Native American heritage and the legacy of Apache leaders.
