Meaning & History

Mona is a Scandinavian short form of Monica, used in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish. The name Monica itself has uncertain origins, most likely of Berber or Phoenician origin. In the 4th century, a North African saint named Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo, brought the name to prominence. Throughout the Middle Ages, Monica became associated with Latin moneo meaning 'advisor' and Greek μονός meaning 'one, single', though these are later folk etymologies.

As an English name, Monica has been in general use since the 18th century, reaching peak popularity in the United States in the 1970s. Modern bearers include the Yugoslav-American tennis player Monica Seles (born 1973). In Scandinavia, the short form Mona has long been a common given name, standing independently.
