Meaning & History
Etymology and Meaning
Minakshi (also spelled Meenakshi) is a feminine given name of Sanskrit origin, derived from the elements मीन (mīna) meaning "fish" and अक्षि (akṣi) meaning "eye", thus giving the overall meaning "fish-eyed". This name is most famously borne by the Hindu goddess Meenakshi, an incarnation of Parvati, who is the tutelary deity of the Tamil city of Madurai.
Mythological Significance
According to Hindu tradition, Princess Meenakshi was born to the King of Madurai and later became a warrior queen of the ancient Pandya kingdom. She was so fierce and accomplished in battle that no suitor could match her until she met Sundaresvarar, a form of Shiva, whom she married. She was subsequently deified and is worshipped as the goddess Meenakshi. Along with Kamakshi of Kanchipuram and Visalakshi of Varanasi, she is considered one of the three principal avatars of Adi Shakti. She is represented as the divine consort of Sundaresvarar, and the sister of Alagar, a form of Vishnu.
Cultural and Religious Context
The name Minakshi is deeply rooted in South Indian religious practice, particularly in Tamil Nadu. The Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai is a major pilgrimage site and one of the most famous Hindu temples in India. Key festivals include the Meenakshi Tirukalyanam, which celebrates the divine marriage of Meenakshi and Shiva. Iconographically, the goddess Meenakshi is usually portrayed with a raised right hand holding a lotus, flanked by a green parrot, while her left hand hangs by her side. The name is popular among Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, and Telugu-speaking communities, with variant spellings such as Meenakshi used in Bengali and Telugu.
