Metodija is the Macedonian form of Methodius, a name with deep theological and historical roots. The name Methodius is a Latinized form of the Greek name Μεθόδιος (Methodios), which derives from the Greek word μέθοδος (methodos) meaning "pursuit" or "method." This word itself comes from μετά (meta), meaning "with," and ὁδός (hodos), meaning "road, way, journey." Thus, the name can be interpreted as "one who follows a way" or "methodical."
Etymology
The name Methodius is best known through Saint Methodius, a 9th-century Greek missionary to the Slavs. Together with his brother Cyril (also known as Constantine), he developed the Glagolitic alphabet, which later influenced the Cyrillic script, to translate the Bible into Old Church Slavonic. This work was instrumental in the Christianization of the Slavic peoples and in the development of Slavic literary culture. The feast day of Saints Cyril and Methodius is celebrated on February 14 (or May 11 by some churches), and they are venerated as the "Apostles to the Slavs."
