Meaning & History

Menuha is a Hebrew feminine name that literally means "tranquility" or "rest" in Hebrew (from the root נוח, related to peace and repose). The name appears in the Bible in the context of rest granted by God, notably in the verse "Blessed be the Lord who has given rest to his people Israel according to all that he promised" (1 Kings 8:56). Menuha is also a modern Hebrew place name: a moshav (cooperative agricultural settlement) in south-central Israel, founded in 1953 by Jewish refugees from the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The moshav, along with the neighboring community of Nahla, was named after the Biblical passage and simultaneously after the Menuha VeNahala organization, meaning "rest and inheritance," which historically founded the city of Rehovot. As a given name, Menuha is rare but carries deep cultural religious overtones of divine peace and settlement.
