Meaning & History
Mehetav'el is the Hebrew form of Mehetabel, a name derived from the Hebrew roots yatav (יָטַב), meaning "to be happy," and el (אֵל), meaning "God," thus signifying "God makes happy." This name appears briefly in the Old Testament. In the biblical narrative, Mehetabel is identified as the wife of Hadad, the last king of Edom mentioned in the patriarchal genealogies (according to Genesis 36:39). The name reflects a common type of theophoric name in Hebrew tradition, wherein the divine element is combined with a verb expressing a positive action or favor bestowed by God. Variant forms include Mehetabel and Mehitabel, the latter of which appears in certain translations of the Bible.
