Meaning & History
Etymology
Margetud is the Old Welsh form of Meredith, a name with a rich linguistic history. It derives from the Old Welsh Margetud, earlier Maredudd or Meredydd. The root elements are thought to be mawredd "greatness, magnificence" and iudd "lord", giving a meaning of "great lord" or "magnificent lord". This etymology situates Margetud among the honorific compound names common in early medieval Wales.
History and Use
In its Old Welsh form, Margetud was used during the early Middle Ages. Over time, it evolved into the medieval Welsh Maredudd and later Meredydd, and ultimately into the modern Meredith. In Wales, the name remained masculine, but in English-speaking countries by the mid-20th century it shifted toward feminine usage, while still retaining its masculine identity in Wales.
Notable Bearers
While Margetud itself is an ancient form without known historical bearers, the modern Meredith was borne famously as a surname by English novelist and poet George Meredith (1828–1909). The name also appears in Welsh legend and genealogy for early medieval figures.
