Meaning & History

Manel is a Portuguese diminutive of Manuel, which is itself the Portuguese and Spanish form of Emmanuel, a name of Hebrew origin meaning 'God is with us' (from Immanuel in Isaiah 7:14). The use of Manel as a given name is primarily found in Portugal and among Portuguese-speaking communities.

The name Manuel has a rich history in the Iberian Peninsula, having been used since at least the 13th century. It was notably borne by two kings of Portugal: Manuel I (1469–1521), who reigned during the Age of Discovery and oversaw the expansion of the Portuguese Empire, and Manuel II (1889–1932), the last king of Portugal before the republic was proclaimed in 1910. The prominence of Manuel in Portuguese royalty contributed to the popularity of its diminutive forms, including Manel.

In the Byzantine Empire, the Greek form Manouēl (Μανουήλ) was used, most famously by Emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143–1180) and Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos (1350–1425). It is suggested that the name reached Spain and Portugal through connections between the Byzantine and Iberian royal families. For example, Ferdinand III of Castile married Elisabeth of Hohenstaufen, who had Byzantine heritage, and their son was named Manuel.

Relative forms include the variant Nelinho, feminine forms like Manuela and Manoela (the latter prevalent in Brazilian Portuguese), and cognates in other languages such as Basque (Imanol), Armenian (Manvel), French (Emmanuel), and its Biblical Greek and Latin counterparts.
