Maj is a Slovene masculine given name. It may derive as a masculine form of Maja, which ultimately traces back to the Greek maia meaning "good mother" or "foster mother," or it may be directly taken from the Slovene name for the month of May. As a short form of Maja, Maj shares its root with the Greek mythological figure Maia, the eldest of the Pleiades and mother of Hermes by Zeus. The connection to the month of May is also strong; in many cultures, the month is named after Maia, making the two interpretations interrelated. The name is used predominantly in Slovenia. While not extremely common, it fits a pattern of short, nature- or calendar-inspired names in the region.
