Meaning & History
Mahulena is a female given name of Czech origin, possibly inspired by Magdalena. The Czech author Julius Zeyer created it for a character in his play Radúz and Mahulena (1898). The Slovak variant is Mahuliena.
The name likely arose as a poetic or literary adaptation of Magdalena, which itself is the Latinate form of Magdalene, meaning "of Magdala" — a village on the Sea of Galilee. Mary Magdalene, a follower of Jesus in the New Testament, was named after this village. Through its association with Mary Magdalene and her enduring symbolism of devotion and witness, the underlying root connects Mahulena to a long tradition of female names derived from venerated figures in Christianity.
In Czech and Slovak culture, the name Mahulena remains relatively rare but recognized due to its literary and cinematic presence. The play Radúz and Mahulena, in which the name first appeared, became well-known as a Slovenská fable, possibly blending Slovak folklore with the author's stylization. In 1986, a Slovak-German fairy-tale film entitled Mahuliena, Golden Maiden (Slovak: Mahuliena, zlatá panna) further popularized the name. Slovak name day is celebrated on 22 July, while Czech name day falls on 17 November.
Notable bearers include Mahulena Bočanová, a Czech actress; Mahulena Nešlehová, a Czech painter's theorist and curator; and Mahulena Richterová, a Czech medical doctor.
