The Qur'an recounts that the inhabitants of Hell will cry out to Maalik, pleading for their end, but he will reply that they must remain forever, its torment never lightened. This figure is distinct from the Islamic concept of Malik (with a different spelling), but both names ultimately derive from the same Semitic root; some early manuscripts even alternate between maalik and malak (“angel”), linking the name to broader notions of rulership.
